H & Mason Martin Margiela?

Yes it is true; the much anticipated collaboration of Mason Martin Margiela and H&M is to hit stores as of tomorrow! But having won tickets for a Vogue reader event, I was able to ‘pre-shop’ the collection tonight at the flagship store on Regent Street, with not only an exclusive shopping experience, but canapés, wine and a gift bag included. Like London is generally, it was absolutely manic as women dived at each other for the designer items of what formed an innovative, but also positively odd collection.

According to Margiela, the masculine oversized look is to feature in the new trends, with a large amount of tailored items, shirts, oversized jackets, and even a ‘trouser mini-skirt’ – literally being trousers with a co-ordinating mini-skirt attached to it. The masculine oversize however is countered by some almost Grecian, loose draping feminine dresses.
The colour palate is very much dry colours, camel, nudes and blacks. With the exception of some ‘disco ball leggings’ – bright silver panelled leggings that sound horrendous, but were mesmerising, so much so that my friend had to talk me out of further spending my student loan on clothes.

Margiela’s use of ‘re-edition’ tags dating the item to a past time period add a vintage aspect to the line, and this pattern cut jacket is one of a few pieces showing ‘textiles in operation’, with pattern cutting and a ‘car seat cover dress’. The leather jacket as seen in the image to the right looks unfinished, but this unique edge adds an attraction to the classic biker jacket that made it my ultimate favourite in the collection. Somehow, the added lines give it more structure, and attitude! Besides, who can go wrong with a black and gold combo!

Whilst finding the bra-overlay leotard reminiscent of the comedic cuttings of shirts in Mean Girls, and the candy wrapper clutches quite odd, they are an innovation in fashion.

Margiela himself, is an innovation in fashion.
